Ability to select filter criteria from dropdown

I can't see a way of doing this, but think its a much needed feature.

A way of creating pre-populated dropdown fields to be used for filtering. I need my users to be able to select specific criteria rather than enter a search term, as they won't know what to search for i.e. they may need to filter a list of product categories

Is there a workaround for this? Has anyone managed to create dropdown selection lists?

I would need nearly the same feature, but not as dropdown (to select one single filter criteria) but as checkboxes (to select one or more filter criterias) at the same time.

Is this possible out of the box or is there a workaround?

could the list not be converted to a combo field so you could select multiple options?

I'd like to sign up on this! I would really love the ability to sort by dropdown I guess it's not a function that will be coming soon(?)

By the way, I just launched my site and I'm simply loving toolsJX! It's by far the most important extension I've got.
