every time I type in: user = '@user_id' and hit save
It changes to: user = \'@user_id\'

What is causing this?

Another bug, apparently. According to your description. It seems that the single quote sign gets escaped, but it should not. We will take a closer look.
You can try using @user_id without quotes until we fix it.

We could not reproduce this issue. Are you maybe using Magic Quotes on your server?

Sorry for the late reply Tomaz. It was an issue with my joomla install. ToolsJX was not the problem.
